Mortimer Abner Cashman, a long-time resident of Glen Rock, New Jersey, passed away at his home on September 14, 2018. He was 95. Morty was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. He loved music and studied violin as a child. He was an avid reader and enjoyed creative writing and poetry. Morty graduated from James Madison High School in Brooklyn and attended NYU where he studied mechanical engineering. During WWII, Morty helped the war effort by working on B-24 carburetors as a flight maintenance mechanic at the Air Service Command in Rome, NY. Morty’s professional career was in the retail furniture industry. He managed several stores for W&J Sloane for many years, including their flagship Fifth Avenue store, and managed the furniture and related departments at Abraham & Strauss in Paramus, NJ before retiring. Hard-working, organized, decisive, patient, and always with a positive attitude, Morty was highly respected as a model of smart management and employee relations. Morty had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed listening to and telling amusing stories. He was very mechanically inclined, and took pride in fixing things around his home and helping his children with their homes. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, Ruth, meeting new people and making new friends. Morty was a kind and gentle man, and everyone who knew him, loved him. He cherished his family and was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his beloved and devoted wife and best friend of 71 years, Ruth; his son Marc and daughter-in-law Lola; his daughter Ronnie Asea and son-in-law Mike; his granddaughter Remy; and his nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 17, 2018 at 12:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary of Abraham & Sarah inside Cedar Park Cemetery in Paramus, NJ. Donations may be made in Morty’s memory to the Glaucoma Research Foundation or to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation.
