Dorothy N. Ziman, 87, a longtime resident of Bloomfield and most recently of Hawthorne, New Jersey, passed away on Friday, June 2, 2017. Born December 2, 1929, in New York, New York, she was the daughter of the late Irene and Zoltan Neuman. Dorothy was predeceased by her prior husband Harold and her siblings Arthur Neuman and Mildred Kearney. Dorothy was a graduate of The City College of New York, and earned Masters Degrees from Hunter College and a Doctorate in Education from Teachers College of Columbia University, specializing in the education of special needs children. Dorothy was a lifelong educator, having worked in the New York City public schools as a teacher and principal in the 1950’s and 60’s, and then later in multiple school systems and for the State Department of Education in New Jersey. Dorothy is remembered as a caring and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, and as an intrepid traveler and voracious reader with a true zest for life and learning. She is survived by her current husband George Spiegel; her daughter Lani Lipis and husband Mark of Los Angeles, CA; three sons, Stephen and his wife, Susan of San Rafael, CA, Jonathan and wife, Darlene, of Mahwah, NJ and Kenneth and his wife, Karen, of New York, NY; and six grandchildren, David, Benjamin, Taylor, Tyler, Jacob and Andrew. The family wishes to thank all of those who cared for her during her last years. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 6th at 11:00 AM, at Robert Schoem’s Menorah Chapel (Paramus, NJ). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to The City College Fund of The City College of New York or the Southern Poverty Law Center.
