Clarice Maykow-Rich
Tuesday, 10 January 1922 - Wednesday, 07 August 2019
Funeral Date: Friday, 09 August 2019

Of the Bronx, NY, died peacefully at the age of 97 on August 7th, 2019, leaving her loving son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Adrienne; grandchildren, Holly and Bradley; sister, Dorothy Kryger and many other loving family members to all of whom she was devoted. She was married to Ben Maykow, Accountant for the City of New York, from 1946 until he passed away in 1974. In 1979, she married Jack Rich, Esq., who predeceased her in 1991.

Clarice was a graduate of Evander Childs High School in the Bronx and held both BA and MA degrees from Hunter College in New York. She taught second grade for many years at P.S. 76 in the Bronx and was an original United Federation of Teachers organizer.

Clarice was politically active almost her entire life, casting her first Presidential vote for Franklin Roosevelt and her last for Hillary Clinton. During her summers, she traveled the world with the New York Jewish Teachers group, seeing most of Europe, as well as Japan, Hong Kong, and mainland China shortly after it opened to Western tourists.

After Clarice retired from teaching, she spent many happy winters in Century Village, Deerfield Beach, Florida, where she played tennis, golf, and bridge with her many friends. She continued her political activities, and ferried people to and from voting sites.

When illness forced Clarice to return to New York full-time, she maintained contact with her many friends and neighbors in Florida and in Riverdale, where she lived for over 40 years. When she could no longer go out, especially in the cold weather, her family and friends came to her. She loved to discuss politics and remained politically astute until the end.

In her final years, Clarice had support from her devoted niece, Dr. Roberta Donin, and three dedicated caregivers, Bibi Allie, Janet Sangster, and Marcia Stone, without whom she would never have made it to 97. The family is grateful to them for their loving care over the years. Clarice lived a long, full, and eventful life. Family and friends will remember her as a fiercely independent woman who was ahead of her time.

A funeral service will be held at noon, Friday, August 9th, at Robert Schoem’s Menorah Chapel, 150 Route 4-EAST, Paramus, NJ. The family will receive guests from 11-12 at the Chapel. Burial will follow at Cedar Park Cemetery in Paramus.

Shiva will be observed at the home of Ken and Adrienne Maykow.
