Brenda Gail Fishkin, 72, of Nanuet, New York passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 15th, 2020. She was born September 21, 1947 in Brooklyn, NY to Sarah and Aron Lefkowitz, both Holocaust survivors. After the death of her father, Brenda’s mother married Julius Harman who treated her as his own daughter. He also brought into the marriage a sister for her. She and Mary Ella became as close as any sisters could be. Brenda married and moved with her family to Rockland County in 1972. She worked for many years as a teacher and guidance counselor for children with both physical and mental disabilities, in Orange and Rockland Counties, as well as the Bronx. After retiring from the NYC Board of Education she began part-time work as an adult ESL teacher at BOCES. She always enjoyed her work.
In her 50’s, her passion for art and poetry blossomed into a prolific obsession. She started with just a couple of art classes which grew into drawing and painting, clay and stone sculpture, memoir writing and poetry. A few years ago she held an art exhibit at a Nyack gallery. She was also able to see her poetry put together in a book.
Brenda is survived by her children Andrea (Michael) Bellantone and Ken (Rebecca) Fishkin, and her grandchildren Jack, Nora and Samara. She is also survived by her sister May Ella Feinleib.
Funeral services will be private. A Memorial will be held in Brenda’s name at a later date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association
