Sheila Jacobs Carey, a devoted family member, research biologist, world traveler and charitable volunteer passed peacefully on September 27, 2018 of complications of dementia. She was 78 years old from Wayne, NJ

Born on October 10, 1939 to Rosalind and Max Lehrhaupt in Staten Island, NY, she was an accomplished student. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1961, received her Masters in Science from Long Island University in 1964 and her Doctorate in Philosophy from Columbia University in 1968. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Beta Phi, Phi Sigma and Sigma Xi.

She had a distinguished career as a research microbiologist and immunologist. She was an associate professor at New York Medical College, Valhalla from 1976-1981 and at Wagner College from 1981-82. She was a Senior Scientist and Section Leader at Schering Plough Corp. from 1984 until retiring in 2004. She contributed to the fields of microbiology and immunology with numerous research publications.

She was a long-time and active member of Temple Emanuel of North Jersey, a volunteer for Kosher Meals-on-Wheels and a lifelong environmentalist.

She was foremost a loving and devoted family member. She is survived by her beloved husband of 33 years Robert Carey. She will be deeply missed by her sister and brother-in-law Carol and Anthony Lobianco, children Marcy Kocen and her husband Brad, Sharon Jacobs and her husband Michael Chalfin, Christine Rose and her husband Jim, Doreen Sanders, Kevin Carey and Sean Carey and his wife Cynthia; grandchildren Jesse and Valerie Little, Sophie and Max Chalfin-Jacobs, Ryan and Travis Sanders, Jamie Rose, Nicholas, Spencer, Walker, Benjamin and Luke Carey.

Funeral Services will be held graveside on Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at 11 am at George Washington Memorial Park, 234 Paramus Rd., Paramus, NJ In lieu of flowers, donations to American Jewish World Service or Birthright Israel Foundation would be deeply appreciated
